Babies are not exempted when it comes to allergies, which is all the more reason why everyone, including parents should be even more cautious of the substances your child is exposed to. It is of utmost importance to determine their sensitivity to allergens considering that babies are not yet fully developed when it comes to medical, physical, and health immunities. Sometimes, symptoms showing only a simple case of cold, rashes, or runny nose may actually be an indication of allergic reactions. However, no matter how careful you are with babies, to the point that you are creating another “boy in the plastic bubble,” allergies are normal occurrence for both babies and adults.  Here are some ways to cope should your baby develop allergies:

  1.  Don’t panic, and deal with the issue fast. The sooner you attend to it, the better for both you and your baby.  You can just imagine the loud wailing of your baby penetrating your eardrum or his or her being fussy will give you discomfort and paranoia.
  2.  Some of the old wives’ tales are useful so do not smirk on them because relief is the first thing you should do for your babies.  One of the most common symptoms of allergies include itchiness and the natural thing to do is to get rid of baby clothing and apply baby friendly anti-histamine cream and solutions or skin moisturizer.
  3.  If you believe that allergy symptoms are really severe, it is best to call 911, otherwise;
  4.  Immediately schedule an appointment with your doctor to treat the allergy immediately.  Ask your doctor prescriptions for allergy relief.  Some doctors will have to perform a series of blood tests and skin tests to determine what causes allergic reactions.
  5. Take note of the causes of allergy symptoms and avoid them so your babies will not suffer from the same allergies over and over again. To put it simply, just look for the trigger and avoid it.

What’s at least good about allergy is that babies will outgrow some of them when they grow older.  But you need to be watchful not only with food they eat and the environment they are frequently in; you also have to take note of their genetic composition (and yours) too as there are allergy symptoms that just won’t go away as in the case of asthma. For as long as it is still there, the risk of allergy symptoms will always be present.

Lastly, as parents, you should be able to determine if the symptoms are allergic reactions or just normal cough and colds.  Doing so will help ease out your feelings of distress and paranoia.
