Winter Skin Care Tips for People With Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a non-contagious skin disorder which results in red, scaly patches on the skin. While these patches can appear anywhere in the body, they are usually seen on the elbows, knees, lower back, and scalp. As the seasons change, people with psoriasis also notice changes in the severity of their condition. Sometimes, they experience worse.

The chilly air during the holiday season may bring dry air, colder temperatures, reduced exposure to sunlight, and poor hydration, which can contribute to a flare-up. While there’s no cure yet to this condition, here are some tips that may help reduce the symptoms:

Moisturize

The cold air deprives the skin of the essential moisture that keeps it soft. Therefore, be sure that you keep your skin moisturized to prevent drying, redness, and itchiness. Fragrance-free and chemical-free soaps and shower gels are better than those with scents as they are less damaging to the skin. Thicker creams and ointments may also help lock in moisture.

Hydrate

It is common to skip a glass of water during the cold season. However, not drinking enough water could result in dehydration, which is the common cause of dry skin. It could also lead to an accumulation of toxins in the body, which could flare up psoriasis. Make sure that you drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily to keep your body’s water levels in check.

Better Bath Ritual

Showering frequently can strip off the skin’s natural moisture and oils. Opt to use warm water and maybe if you’ve had a long day at work, you can pamper yourself in a bathtub filled with warm water and finely ground oatmeal powder or Epsom salt. Once in a while, gently rub the dead skin away so the dirt won’t accumulate. After bathing, gently pat dry your skin with a soft clean towel.

Wear Appropriate Clothes

The dip in temperature can cause dryness and trigger your psoriasis symptoms. Be sure that you have a soft scarf, gloves or hoodie to protect the exposed areas of the skin. It is better to choose organic cotton over wool since organic cotton clothes do not contain chemicals that can potentially irritate your skin further.

Other Tips

  • Avoid wearing perfume
  • Steer clear from fatty foods and meat
  • Reduce your sugar consumption
  • Stock up on foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation or redness
  • Wear sunscreen before stepping out
  • Use a humidifier at home to keep the air moist
