6 Steps to get the best underwear for your health

RSS

Scouring the underwear market could be pretty discouraging these days. Should you opt for boxers or brief? Is cotton the most optimal choice? Are thongs really that bad for you? How about G-strings, V-strings, C-strings? Really, should it be this complicated?

Our alternatives are only going to range far and wide and downright bizarre as time passes, but don't let it perplex you. So, it turns out that basic cotton briefs just might be your best bet. Other styles may cause some health problems — from skin irritation to yeast infections — if worn frequently and in unsuitable situations. Consider these to find out the best practices in selecting the proper underwear for you:

1. Material matters.

Try to stick with 100% cotton underwear. For regular daily use, nothing is as comfortable as a pair of cotton panties <link to ladies bottoms>. Cotton underwear is the best due to the material’s breathability. Its lightweight and soft texture is perfect for everyday use and moderately light physical exercise, like yoga or lifting. Cotton is airy and wicks moisture away from the body unlike other types of fabric. Synthetic fabrics tend to accumulate moisture and could possibly cause skin irritation.

2. Choose the right size for you.

Too-tight underwear increases irritation. Not only is it unflattering (hello muffin tops and ruck ups), but it actually causes skin chafing and vaginal irritation especially for those in the post-menopausal stage. According to Raquel B. Dardik, M.D. of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NYU Langone Medical Center, “For women who are menopausal, their vaginal walls tend to be thin.”  In view of this, any underwear that’s tight enough to rub your skin can result in irritation, she explains. “If your skin doesn’t get irritated, then great — tight underwear won’t hurt you. But if you do get irritated because of friction, then it’s not recommended.”

3. Think twice before you thong.

Did you know that the wrong pair of undies can raise the risk of infection? Most women rely on thong underwear to avoid visible panty lines and awkward creasing that occurs with a full panty. Some panties aren't necessarily healthy for you to wear because of its unique shape. Thongs make it easy for bacteria to travel from your anus to your vagina, which can lead to conditions like urinary tract infection. Resist confusing fashion and function or else, you may be prone to infection.

4. Care for your underwear properly.

Proper care for underwear is vital in prolonging its life and ensuring that you get the most comfort from it. Use a skin-friendly hypoallergenic laundry detergent. Treat your skin down there as sensitively as possible, experts advise. You should also avert using bleach when your intimates are involved. Hand washing is essential for bras, using a soap designed for delicates. Read and follow the care label carefully and make sure to store all underwear in an airy, clean space. Wash them on a regular basis or you will start to smell, even if you have just showered.

5. Replace underwear regularly.

It is not ideal to keep hold of your underwear long after its useful life. As its fabric sags and loses its shape, dispose of it and restock your unmentionables. Well fitting underwear will increase your comfort level and will keep your clothes over it fit better. Alternating your undergarments frequently, as well as using the suggested care instructions will greatly extend the comfort and life of your underwear. Although there is no set lifespan of your underwear, use your judgement when it comes time for replacing them. If your underwear doesn't fit well, your outerwear will not look good. Here are some average life duration for your underwear:

Bras – 3-6 months; or longer if you have more and rotate them but even then, they should be changed every year.
Underpants – 6 months

6. Consider organic.

Not only does choosing organic underwear sustain an industry of manufacturers growing  natural, pesticide-free fabric materials, but also, much of this type of clothing comes without chemicals or dyes used in its production. Since your underwear is constantly in contact with your skin and is under your clothing most of the time, such chemicals can potentially cause skin irritation over time. Keep this in mind if you have very sensitive skin.

Ladies, now you know what to consider when shopping for underwear. So, just figure out what your body needs, and pick up the right pair for yourself. Make sure you make the selection in a way that your panty makes you feel both-comfortable and healthy.

I waited a long, long time for the Queen front closure bra in my size (42DD), but it was worth the agonizing wait I feel like a normal person again. No itching, no embarrassing riding up and falling out , no using a safety pin to pull the strings through! Thank you, Cottonique, for listening and for providing such great products. I love the waist briefs too, but most of all the Queen front closure bra is a lifesaver. Excellent products!!!!! Love you cottonique.
