We list some tips to help you keep your house clean while keeping your allergies under control:

Vacuum with a HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner

HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. This type of filter works by forcing air through a fine mesh that traps harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, etc.

Declutter your home

Extra boxes and decoration act as wonderful vantage point for dust, mites, and roaches and you don’t want those in your home.

Wear cleaning masks, disposable gloves, and long clothing

Wear a mask that will keep you from breathing in allergens, and also to keep your skin away from other irritants. Cotton masks are good, for they are softer and more comfortable on your skin. Also, make sure to wash those clothes ASAP afterward, since they can contain dust mites.

Eliminate bathroom molds

Moist areas such as your bathroom, laundry room, and basement, are places where molds thrive. Clean your bathroom and other mold-prone areas regularly, including your shower curtains.

Replace and wash your bedsheets

Wash your bed sheets once a week in hot water, about 130 F or warmer, to kill dust mites. Same goes with stuffed animals and couch covers too.

Don't air dry your laundry

Hanging your clothes out to dry exposes it to pollen and mold. Use the clothes dryer instead.

Avoid using scented cleansers and detergents

Household products often contain fragrances that can trigger allergies. Get fragrance-free cleansers and detergents instead.

Don’t neglect outside entryways

If you come from the outdoors, you can potentially carry allergens without realizing it. Be sure to sweep sidewalks, patios, and decks regularly.

Use damp cloth and mop

This will trap dust, pollen and other potential allergens, instead of getting them into the air.

Leave the house for a few hours after cleaning

Dust and dust mites tend to get airborne when you clean, and it will take more than two hours for them to settle again. If you need to do something indoors asap, at least keep your mask on for a while.
