Should you Wear Underwear to Bed (or Not)?

Should you Wear Underwear to Bed (or Not)?

Most people don’t think that buying the right underwear is as important as wearing them. Especially when it’s time to go to bed most people don’t think that they should have to put some effort into choosing which underwear to put on because to them it doesn’t really matter.

How many times have you fallen asleep wearing your old gym shorts or that tattered team-building shirt you got from your old job? Most of us wouldn’t think twice about putting on whatever we first see in our closets when we’re about to hit the sack all because we’re either too tired to think about what to wear or we don’t think that it matters what we wear when we sleep.

But the truth is that what we wear in bed can affect how well we sleep and since our essentials are one of the most sensitive areas of our bodies it’s just as important to choose which underwear we put on when we’re about to snooze. Your choice of sleepwear or any other type of outfit is really entirely up to you. But there are certain types of fabrics that can pose a few problems with our overall health.

There is also that pending discussion on whether it is okay to wear undies to bed or not. LiveScience (a renowned Science news website) has gathered helpful insights from health experts regarding wearing underwear to bed.

Here are some of the important discussion points to consider:

On Women

It is a common perception that many women have their own nighttime routine which may include putting on their nighties or their choice of sleepwear. In general, women do not need to be completely nude when they go to bed according to Dr. Alyssa Dweck, a gynecologist and obstetrician in Mount Kisco, New York City. Women can sleep in their underwear without the risk of experiencing any significant health problems.

However, women who suffer from chronic vaginitis, which is the inflammation of the vagina or chronic vulvitis, inflammation of the folds of the skin outside the vagina, can benefit from going commando.  Women who suffer from the above mentioned conditions are more likely to experience irritations, itchiness and yeast infections and not wearing any undies at night can lessen the risk of experiencing the symptoms. Bacteria and yeast can thrive well in a dark, moist and warm environment.

Vaginal irritation and similar conditions can happen when the private parts are covered up for a long time. The area around the private parts can become a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast infections. Another reason to make you skip wearing undies to bed is to spice up your sex life. The absence of undies can certainly enhance the intimacy between you and your partner.

On Men

Most men are not too concerned with fashion let alone what they wear to bed. So when it comes to sleepwear, men would just wear something that they are most comfortable in.  Fortunately for men, there are no proven health benefits or even risks if they go commando or not during bedtime. Dr. Michael Eisenberg, director of male reproductive medicine and surgery and urologist at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, California has revealed that men who prefer to wear underwear to bed will not experience any negative side effects on their sperm cells.

Dr. Eisenberg recently worked on a study and was published in the journal Andrology, which looked at the significant impact of the type of underwear or lack thereof on the ability of the couple to conceive. The results showed that there is no effect on a man's ability to reproduce based on what he wore to sleep at night. However, some studies in the past have shown that men who prefer to wear tight underpants to bed can have an impact on the quality of their semen because of the increased temperature surrounding the testicles. So it’s best if men wear underwear that’s most comfortable for them.

In the end, the decision to wear or not to wear underwear to bed depends on you. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that you go to bed clean and fresh.
